Rising into Leadership: My Journey from National Youth Awardee to Board Chair of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation

My Journey from National Youth Awardee to Board Chair of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation

In 2001, I was honored to receive the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Youth Award in the Science and Technology category, representing Miami. It was a pivotal moment for me—being recognized for my achievements at the regional level and then going on to compete at the national level. This recognition meant the world to me, not only because it provided the financial support I needed to attend my dream school, Brown University, but also because it connected me with a community that has become like family. The award wasn’t just about academics; it celebrated my commitment to service and my deep pride in my Mexican-American cultura.

That moment marked the beginning of a lasting relationship with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF), which has come full circle with my current role as the first woman and Latina Board Chair of this incredible organization. My recognition reflected my dedication to science and technology, my passion for giving back to the community that raised me, and my desire to proudly represent my heritage.

From the beginning of my relationship with the foundation, I found an incredibly powerful sense of community and belonging. I felt seen for who I truly was, and that recognition wasn’t just extended to me—it trickled out to all the young adults who joined the HHF community. We weren’t treated as the leaders of tomorrow but as today’s young leaders. Our ideas, passion, and commitment to making a difference were taken seriously.

This sense of empowerment shaped my journey with the foundation. I stayed connected with the Foundation’s CEO and President, Antonio Tijerino (Tony) and the HHF team, always finding ways to be involved, and in return, they continually trusted me with opportunities to contribute. I attended events nationwide, volunteered for projects, and traveled with the team. I had the privilege of emceeing the Youth Awards ceremonies, which further deepened my connection to the foundation’s mission. One of the most rewarding experiences was my work with the Latinos on Fast Track (LOFT) program, where we placed talented students in major industries like JPMorgan Chase, Verizon, and ExxonMobil. That hands-on experience gave me insight into the foundation’s operations and team dynamics and a deeper understanding of Tony’s visionary leadership.

My relationship with Tony and the foundation paved the way for future career opportunities, but more than that, it instilled in me the belief that my voice—and the voices of other young Latinos—mattered. We were trusted to lead, and that sense of agency shaped my professional and personal development.

Through all of those experiences, I learned that the foundation’s mission is deeply rooted in responding to the evolving needs of our community. It’s a flexible, forward-thinking organization, and that adaptability is one reason it has succeeded in elevating Latino voices. I was continually inspired by Tony’s vision and the work to empower our next generation of leaders.

As the years went on, I developed connections with leaders across industries, all while deepening my relationship with the foundation. So, when the opportunity to serve on the board came up, I was honored, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t also hesitant. Like many, I experienced imposter syndrome—wondering if I was truly the right person for the role. But I showed up, as I had always done, and slowly that hesitation transformed into confidence.

Over time, I served as a board member, then as secretary, and eventually, I found myself stepping into the role of interim board chair. And now, as I take on the full title of board chair, I can reflect on that journey with gratitude. The question that once haunted me—”Who am I to be on this board?”—has shifted to, “Who am I not to be on this board?” My experiences, passion, and commitment to this organization have prepared me for this role.

This past year has been one of tremendous growth. I’ve had the chance to work alongside incredibly talented board members, learn from their perspectives, and leverage their strengths. Together, we’ve fostered partnerships that reflect our shared vision for the foundation’s future—a future where the voices and stories of Latinos across the country are elevated and celebrated.

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s mission has always been about empowerment, which excites me most as I look forward. In many ways, this journey reflects a core principle of my book, Sparkle On Changemaker: “Empower Legacy.” It’s not just about what we accomplish today—it’s about laying the foundation for those who will come after us. I believe in community power, standing up for our values, and inspiring others to do the same.

Being the first woman and Latina Board Chair of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation is an honor I don’t take lightly. I step into this role with immense pride, not just for myself but for every young Latina out there who dreams of making an impact. I’m committed to continuing the foundation’s work, supporting our next generation of leaders, and ensuring the Latino community continues to rise and shine.

What I learned through my journey with the foundation has also helped shape my work with the World Happiness Summit (WOHASU) today. WOHASU has taught me that well-being is a collective effort beyond individual happiness; it’s about building communities rooted in belonging and purpose. The HHF and WOHASU share a key value: both understand that true leadership arises from connection, compassion, and responding to the needs of those we serve. The pillars of well-being I’ve embraced at WOHASU have helped guide my approach as Chair of the HHF, ensuring that we prioritize the emotional and communal well-being of our board members and the larger Latino community we represent.

I’m excited for the future we’re building together. ¡Y sí se puede!
